The FlyBy 5K iis at 10 a.m. followed by the 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 21. The aviation-themed race takes participants on a course on one of the runways at the Pittsburgh International Airport.

This is not your typical runway event.

There won’t be fashion models showing off the latest fall trends on the catwalk.

But there will be people in sneakers, shorts and T-shirts jogging along a Pittsburgh International Airport runway.

Race day is Saturday for the aviation-themed race. The FlyBy 5K is at 10 a.m. (cost is $40) followed by the 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk at 10:10 a.m. (cost is $20). Children 4 and under are free.

Both events are presented by CNX Resources, a Canonsburg-based natural gas company.

The fourth annual race is run by P3R, an organization that produces races, including the annual Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon as well as other running events and health and fitness programs, in partnership with the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

The course will be lined with more aircraft and equipment than ever before, including the KC-135 Stratotanker, Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team, MedEvac Helicopter and PIT’s Operations Team Snow-Mobile Equipment, according to a news release.

More than 1,500 participants are expected, airport officials said.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for families to have fun on the airfield as part of a unique event made possible with the help of all our partners, “ Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said.

The race provides runners a new way to look at the airport, said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO in the release.

“This event keeps growing and has become a must-do event for families who enjoy being active together,” he said.

Racers will receive a technical men’s or women’s finisher’s shirt and medal along with as enjoy post-race food and entertainment.

The race benefits Allegheny County Airport Authority Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit organization established to assist members of the military, families and others traveling through the airport.
