The REAL ID Act, passed by the U.S. Congress in 2005, requires changes to state standards, procedures, and requirements for the issuance of driver's licenses and identification cards, if they are to be accepted as identity documents by the federal government.

Key Information for PA Residents

As of January 2018:
  • Real ID is not being enforced at this time as Pennsylvania has filed for extensions.
  • Your PA driver’s license is still valid for domestic flights.
  • Real ID will ultimately be available by Spring 2019, so travelers should be prepared and begin gathering documents needed for REAL ID.
As of March 1, 2018:
  • Beginning March 1, PA drivers who received their FIRST learners permit, drivers license or photo ID after September 2003, will be sent a postcard inviting them to apply for Real ID pre-verification on PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website.
