PASSENGER TRAFFIC JUMPS MORE THAN 11% IN APRIL; LARGEST INCREASE SINCE 2011

PITTSBURGH – In April, Pittsburgh International Airport recorded its biggest monthly jump in passenger traffic since 2011 at 11.2 percent, boosting year-to-date growth to nearly 6 percent.

The increases are largely a result of new service on Southwest to St. Louis and Los Angeles, capacity growth on Southwest to Orlando, as well as new seasonal service to New Orleans. The airline also continued seasonal service to West Palm Beach for an additional two weeks in April. New flights on Frontier and OneJet, and capacity growth on United to Chicago, also contributed to the totals.

"These numbers are impressive and continue a four-year trend of growth at Pittsburgh International,” said Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis. “We are encouraged by the increases in flights, seats and passenger traffic that indicate confidence in our market by the airlines."

 

In April, Southwest carried just over 30 percent of all passengers traveling through Pittsburgh International, followed by American at 27 percent, Delta at 16 percent and United at 14 percent. Airlines including Allegiant, JetBlue, Frontier, Air Canada, Southern Airways, OneJet and Porter combined for the remaining 13 percent.

 

In April 2017, 720,778 passengers traveled through the airport compared with 648,165 passengers in 2016. Through the first four months of 2017, 2,591,953 passengers have flown compared with 2,448,306 in 2016. Nearly every carrier saw more passengers in April 2017, and all but three carriers saw double-and triple-digit year-over-year growth.
