NEW EXHIBITIONS EXPANDING ART IN THE AIRPORT PROGRAM

PITTSBURGH – Two new art installations featuring Pittsburgh artists and one showcasing a national ceramics conference, along with additional calls for artwork, are delighting travelers and helping to expand and diversify the Art in the Airport program at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Currently on view in the Ticketing Level display case in the Landside Terminal is a new installation titled “Glitter Box” by artist Ryder Henry. A group exhibition in collaboration with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference that is being held in Pittsburgh from March 14-17 has also been installed in the Transit Level display cases.  Also new to the airport is a digital drawing by Deanna Mance titled “The Fool at the Precipice” which is located in the Airside Terminal, Concourse C.

The new installations complement airport art exhibits from acclaimed institutions including the Carnegie Museums, Contemporary Craft, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.

“The airport is the gateway for visitors to our region, and these new initiatives and partnerships help expand and diversify our offerings,” said Rachel Saul Rearick, Arts and Culture Manager. “These installations create a lasting impression not only of our arts community, but also the spirit and identity of Pittsburgh for millions of domestic and international travelers.”

Additionally, the airport is seeking to feature more local artists and musicians as part of the Art in the Airport, Performing Arts Series, and Creating a Sense of Place programs. In collaboration with the Office of Public Art, the airport has issued three requests for proposals for local artists, art collaboratives and art institutions to exhibit at PIT, as well as a requests for qualifications for development of an outdoor parking lot way-finding mural.

“We intend to rotate artwork on a quarterly basis as a way to feature even more of our region’s creative talent, with the hope to further identify our airport as a cultural asset,” Rearick said.

An information session about the parking lot mural will be held at the airport (Landside Terminal Ticketing Level) on March 21 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Interested artists can register at: http://www.pittsburghartscouncil.org/events-and-workshops-etc/gpacevents
