ALLEGHENY COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY SEEKING ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE TO DEVELOP ARTWORK FOR PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

PITTSBURGH – In partnership with the Office of Public Art, the Allegheny County Airport Authority is hosting a year-long artist residency at Pittsburgh International Airport to develop artwork for display in the terminal.

Interested artists are invited to submit qualifications through an open call at http://pittsburghartscouncil.org/artist-in-residence-pittsburgh-international-airport through August 28.

The artist, who will be selected in September, will spend one year getting to know the airport and conducting activities that engage passengers, employees and others, with the goal of producing a creative artwork that will be displayed at the airport.

“We are looking for a highly creative artist who understands the airport and our organization to develop a piece that enhances the ambiance and experience for all,” said Richard Belotti, Vice President of Planning and Director of the Art in the Airport program. “The purpose of the residency is to collaborate on new ideas that engage and connect audiences in and around the airport.”

Based on similar programs that have been conducted at London Heathrow, San Diego and Tampa International airports, the artist residency is being made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Through the Art in the Airport and Creating a Sense of Place programs at Pittsburgh International, airport leaders embrace the arts as a way to connect visitors to the vibrant art and culture of the Pittsburgh region. New terminal initiatives include permanent artworks, a Performing Arts Series, and temporary cultural exhibits by regional assets including the Carnegie Museums.
