The Office of Public Art presents a Pittsburgh International Airport: Alexander Calder walking tour on Saturday, January 27, from 11:30 am – 1:15 pm. The tour will take place at the Pittsburgh International Airport, 1000 Airport Blvd, Pittsburgh, 15231. The tour is free and open to the public, and will primarily showcase Alexander Calder’s mobile Pittsburgh, along with other works in the airport’s public art collection. Leading the tour will be University of Pittsburgh Assistant Professor and Academic Curator in the History of Art and Architecture department Alex J. Taylor. “Alexander Calder’s mobiles were installed in several post-war airports, sites that capitalized upon the artist’s persistent interest in flight, mobility and circulation. Originally produced for the Carnegie International in 1958, Calder’s Pittsburgh is one of his most important large-scale mobiles, and its presence at our airport continues to thematize the experience of air travel in abstract form," said Taylor.
Participants must register in advance with their full names (exactly as they appear on their photo ID) and date of birth by January 25, 2018 at noon, and bring a valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or passport). Participants will be passing through the airport security checkpoint and must observe all federal regulations relating to carry-on bags. Participants should meet at the Starbucks in baggage claim at 11:30 am.
