Pittsburgh International Airport

Even Kelly Ripa was talking about our major award this week.

Friday on ABC’s Live with Kelly , (Click on Friday’s show, 3:56 mark) the perky morning show host correctly guessed that Pittsburgh International Airport was just named “ Airport of the Year” by Air Transport World Magazine, and said she’d “take a plane to Pittsburgh, shop, and come home,” before continuing to gush over our award-winning, world-class shops and restaurants. And it’s not the first time she’s said as much.

All the compliments this week following announcement of the ATW award has our entire team feeling so proud and supported by our wonderful airport community. Before Ripa’s riff, many organizations and partners around the region including VisitPittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Technology Council, the Allegheny Conference, loyal social media followers, university presidents and regional assets like Kennywood sent us congratulatory messages and tweets.

As our CEO says, this is a big deal, and we’re so happy to share this award with more than 8 million travelers that we serve each year. We are the first American airport to win this prestigious award, followed by Hong Kong International, London Heathrow, and Singapore Changi.

Just as our region has successfully reinvented itself and re-emerged in the global spotlight, our airport is once again shining. We have increased nonstop flights more than 80 percent over the past two years, implemented creative airport improvement programs and opened our facilities wider to the community. We ended 2016 with passenger traffic up 2.1, and had the most passengers since 2008.

It’s been a tough road back for us for more than a decade since de-hubbing. But we’re here, we’re ready to serve, and we’re honored to be your airport, Pittsburgh. Thank you for flying with us, and thank you Kelly, for the national shout out!
